The starting point of the NUBERG project came in the form of an old music folder with a handful of short compositions written by the jazz pianist Hanno Beckers from Wuppertal, capital of the „Bergisch Land“ area in the north-west of Germany. These miniatures – some kind of „left overs” – had accumulated over the years and were now supposed to be brought to the stage by a small cast.
At first, Hanno Beckers worked on these short, sketchy themes all of them written for solo piano, in order to create enough space for the extra players to come. Then he invited befriended musicians from the „Bergisch Land“ area („Berg“) to this new (“Nu”) project.
This idea has formed several exciting band constellations by the name NUBERG since 2014…
Despite clear references to the intimate combo sound of the 1950s, the NUBERG musicians’ ensemble playing does not revel in the past, but transports the musical approach of the old masters to the present with gripping original compositions.
On the one hand, there is a broad spectrum from modal jazz, obvious ECM influences to the sound explorations of contemporary – especially northern European – jazz formations.
On the other hand, Hanno Beckers’ compositions stand also in clear relation to the „Bergisch“ origin of the band members. The songs are inspired by everyday situations, small events and stories that have come up from the immediate everyday life of the musicians.
This offers a creative field of tension and emerges that typical NUBERG sound.
Modern, deliberately „European” and yet with a clear local color
